This series of glass sculptures, developed between 2005 and 2008, used stacked, fused, and carved sheet glass, a readily available material, to create objects that draw the viewer’s perspective inside. I found that this material could deliver a crisp and clear volume of solid space, while allowing for three-dimensional drawing within the interior.
Influenced by architectural spaces, these constructions were intended to convey feelings of wonder, exploration, and openness, beginning here with the first glass sculpture I created, Green Cube at left.
Float glass, another name for modern window glass, is cut into sheets and stacked in a kiln where it is surrounded by a mold and fused together at high temperature. The consistent uniform thickness of industrially produced float glass sheets, allows for air pockets to be mostly avoided or to be specifically captured, using carved marks on different layers to produce points, lines, and bubbles.
